The British Virgin Islands (BVI) is a collection of islands located next to the United States Virgin Islands (USVI). The BVI has a governor, which is appointed by the King and locally elected Premier and governing body. The population is roughly 30,000 inhabitants for all 50 of the islands, cay’s and rocks that make up the BVI.
Tortola is the main island in the BVI. The capital, Road Town, is home to the JR O’Neal Botanical Gardens, the Old Governors House which is open to the public and the old Prison museum. There are many beautiful white sand beaches, restaurants, and bars to choose from.
Norman Island is known for the infamous Willy T bar and restaurant. This is a great spot to get lunch, drinks and to take the plunge by jumping off of the top deck of the boat! Pirate’s bar and restaurant is also located here and has a ferry from Tortola. Norman Island is the island that Robert Louis Stevenson’s novel “Treasure Island” is based off of. Treasure has been rumored to have been found here!
Peter Island is home to the Peter Island Resort. This privately owned island has many beaches that visitors are able to enjoy as well as restaurants. The Resort is accessed via ferry from Tortola.
Virgin Gorda is a quick ferry ride from Tortola. A must see on this island is The Baths National Park which is made up of gigantic boulders which you can meander through. There are hidden pools and a beach on either end of the trail. You can also visit the Copper Mine National Park, Savannah Bay beach, admire the view of North Sound from Hog Heaven bar and take a dip at the pool at Leverick Bay.
Jost Van Dyke is not to be missed! Accessed by private boat or ferry, you can spend the day bar hopping, shopping, drinking and eating in multiple establishments. Soggy Dollar Bar located in White Bay is known for its delicious painkiller cocktail and well stocked boutique. There is floating spa where you can relax to the motion of the ocean while being pampered. Over in Great Harbour which is the main harbour for the island, is the legendary Foxy’s Tamarind Bar. You might be lucky and catch a glimpse of Foxy who sometimes visits the bar to tell jokes and stories.
